Setting it up

1. Open the disk image and drag Kymatra to your Applications folder.
2. Launch it. Kymatra has no window and no icon in the Dock. It lives in the menu bar, behind the mark you saw on the disk image.
3. Allow audio recording when macOS asks. Kymatra reads what your Mac is playing, and macOS files that permission under the microphone. Without it the wallpaper stays flat, because there is nothing for it to draw.
4. Open Settings from the menu bar to pick a mode and a color.

Updating

Kymatra does not check for updates and makes no connections of its own, so new versions do not arrive on their own. Use Check for Updates in the menu bar to come back to this page, and compare the version above with the one under Version in Settings.

1. Quit Kymatra from the menu bar. Replacing it while it is running is the one way this goes wrong.
2. Open the new disk image and drag Kymatra to your Applications folder, replacing the copy already there.
3. Launch it. That is the whole of it.

Everything you set up is kept: your modes, colors, saved configurations and whether it opens at login all survive, because none of them live inside the app. macOS will not ask for the recording permission again either, as long as you are updating rather than reinstalling from scratch.

New versions are announced in the Discord, which is the only place they are announced.

If the wallpaper stays flat

Almost always this is the recording permission. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Microphone, and check that Kymatra is allowed. The permission can be granted long after launch and Kymatra will pick it up on its own.

If it still does nothing, use Copy Diagnostics in Settings and send it to support@kymatra.com. It gathers what the app knows about your audio devices and recent activity, and it is put on your clipboard for you to read before you send it.

You can also paste it into the Discord, where somebody may have hit the same thing on the same hardware.

Removing it

Quit Kymatra from the menu bar and drag it to the Trash. If you had it opening at login, macOS removes that with the app. Two files are left behind, which you can delete if you want nothing remaining:
